GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
After a millennia of art exhibition design, a great portion of society still feels intimidated by the ‘Museum’. Our proposal for the Guggenheim Helsinki is to provide spatial opportunities in which both the artist and the viewers have the ability to choose for both the conventional or the unexpected; for exhibition spaces with freedom, the freedom of the real world, the real world which is full of constrains. The sphere is the guiding shape of the design, a strategic formation of six spaces its structural matrix, easing circulation to the landmarks in its proximity: market, terminal, park and waterfront. The volumes that compose this structure are coalesced in a way that retains porosity and maximises accesses and sunlight. The resulting cluster of globes comprises multiple permeable spaces that are both united and divided. The aesthetic impact of the complex would be highly iconic on Helsinki’s waterfront: instead of a façade, it offers a variety of water-level viewpoints. Seeking to unite international ambition and local imprint, its vision fits within the wider spectrum of the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation, unapologetically aiming to be home to a humanistic Museum for the Future.
